•Aging gradients of asphalt films on aggregate surfaces were investigated.•Characterizing and correlating were by molecular simulations and laboratory tests.•Oxygen diffusion and SARA migration helps understand aging molecule mechanism.•FTIR and TLC-FID tests quantify aging degree and SARA changes of asphalt layers.•Nanoindentation report the modulus gradient of asphalt films.
