•Electro/Fe2+/persulfate can efficiently remove diesel from soil washing effluent.•The degradation of diesel was verified by EEM fluorescence spectroscopy.•The reactive radicals formed were identified by EPR technique.•The detoxification of soil washing effluent was evaluated by soil respiration.
