•The presence of tumor necrosis was associated with the upregulation of DDX41 in renal cell carcinoma.•Upregulation of DDX41was an independent predictor of worse prognosis.•DDX41 expression promoted tumor-promoting activity.•Cooperation of upregulation of DDX41 and VHL loss led to increase of CXCL family.
