•Neolithic mandibles were larger in vertical and sagittal dimensions.•Abnormal condylar morphologies are more common in modern mandibles.•Third molars were erupted and rarely impacted in Neolithic mandibles.•Mandibular teeth particularly molar crowns are larger in current Chinese.
