Abstract

•Galectin-3, IL-6 and CRP levels at admission to the hospital were independent risk factors associated with transfer to the intensive care unit.•Only galectin-3 was found as an independent risk factor for need of advanced ventilatory support.•Galectin-3 and IL-6 were detected as independent risk factors related to in-hospital mortality.
