•Determination of cabozantinib, indicated for renal cancer, in urine for the first time.•First time SPE combined with NACE-UV is used for this determination.•This is a valuable strategy to achieve therapeutic levels without sophisticated instrumentation.•Urine form a real patient undergoing treatment for renal cancer was analyzed successfully.
