Biodiesel is a long-term viable alternative to fossil fuels. This chapter discusses advancements in feedstocks used for biodiesel production and various biodiesel production technologies. Each generation of biodiesel has its own set of advantages and disadvantages which are highlighted in the chapter, stating the evolution of biodiesel generation focusing on parameters such as biodiesel efficiency while reducing environmental degradation. For instance, the first generation of biodiesel was made from edible oil feedstocks, with an easy conversion mechanism. Moreover, biodiesel is an effective choice for diesel engines due to its properties such as being renewable, non-toxic, and environmental friendly. Biodiesel is produced by a transesterification process, having fuel properties comparable to those of mineral diesel. This method is also feasible from a financial standpoint. Finally, from the readers’ point of view, the challenges faced in the area are discussed along with the future trends that could pave a new horizon for biodiesel production.
