•The COVID-19 pandemic increased the depressive symptoms amongst older adults in England.•A greater increase was observed in November, coinciding with stricter restrictions.•Individuals who lost their job, retired and women experienced the largest increase.•Limited role of income as a protective mechanism for mental health.•Social interactions may play a relevant role for wellbeing in older adults.
