•This review provides an overview of evidence on screening and diagnosis of women for chorioamnionitis.•Screening and diagnosis is done by clinical signs and symptoms, causative factors, obstetric history and essential biomarkers.•Accurate diagnosis of chorioamnionitis, requires a combination of screening methods.•MMP-8 and other promising rapid, inexpensive, easy-to-use screening methods warrant further research.•Parameters for clinical symptoms, contributing factors and microbes responsible for chorioamnionitis needs further exploration.
