Diagnosis of giant cell arteritis using clinical, laboratory, and histopathological findings in patients undergoing temporal artery biopsy

•We aimed to identify predictive variables for the diagnosis of GCA using clinical, laboratory, and histopathologic features of suspected GCA patients.•Age at biopsy, healed temporal arteritis (HTA), and suggested HTA are predictive for the diagnosis of GCA.•Transient vision loss and arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy were important diagnostic and predictive findings for GCA diagnosis.•CD68 staining is more sensitive but less specific for diagnosing GCA to other histopathologic findings.
