Attachment relationships and psychological distress in young adults: The mediating role of self-esteem

•In youth the relationship between attachment and psychological distress is unexplored.•Here, effects of primary and secondary attachment on distress were examined.•Findings show mediation effects of both attachment types through self-esteem.•First empirical evidence for the individual roles of both types of attachment.
