•The effect of shame-proneness on suicidal ideation is not moderated but mediated by depressive and anger rumination.•Shame-proneness represents a trait vulnerability to the development of suicidal ideation, to which its impacts are exerted through both depressive and anger rumination.•Ruminating on angry memories carries a unique risk in the development for both thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness.
