•The transfer and accumulation of microplastics was simulated for a river food web.•Concentrations were highest in benthic macroinvertebrates and lowest in fish species.•Accumulation of microplastics is not expected based on biota magnification factors.•Further information would improve the accuracy of this version of the model.
