•A high-resolution organic matter δ13C record is present in the Upper Jurassic marine sedimentary rocks from Tibet.•An alternative to phytane- and stomatal density-based pCO2 reconstructions is used with the carbon isotope fractionation.•Δ13C (δ13Ccarb-δ13Ckerogen) and atmospheric pCO2 calculation reveal a cooling event in the Early Tithonian.
