Balancing water reuse and ecological support goals in an effluent dominated river

•Water reuse scenarios were simulated in a hydrologic model for the LA River watershed.•Functional flow metrics show existing conditions support ecology and recreation.•Limited opportunities exist for wastewater reuse with no impacts to beneficial uses.•More opportunity for water reuse exists during the wet season.•The novel approach can be used to assess tradeoffs in managing environmental flows.
