Replacement of soybean meal with alternative protein sources in the concentrate supplement for lactating Holstein × Gyr cows in an intensive tropical pasture-based system: Effects on performance, milk composition, and diurnal ingestive behavior

•Cottonseed, peanut, and sunflower meals were tested as alternative protein sources.•Cows were kept in intensive rotational grazing on Tanzania grass pasture.•Fat-corrected milk yield (3.5% fat) and milk fat increases with peanut meal.•Diurnal ingestive behavior and milk yield are not changed by replacing soybean meal.
