•Ruthenium complex shows catalytic activity on the thermal decomposition of AP.•This compound shows a shift in the peak temperature of AP to the left.•This compound increases the heat released during the thermal decomposition of AP.•DSC techniques examined catalytic activity with an Ea of 20.7 kJ mol−1.
