Hydrotreatment of solvent-extracted biocrude from hydrothermal liquefaction of municipal sewage sludge

•Hydrotreatment of solvent extracted HTL biocrude from sewage sludge was studied.•Four solvents; dichloromethane (DCM), hexane, toluene, and acetone; were investigated.•DCM-biocrude was challenging to hydrotreat because of high chloride content.•Hexane produced the best quality hydrotreated oil in terms of fuel properties.•Most nitrogen-containing compounds were recovered using acetone.
