The association between family physical environment and child maltreatment

•Adverse family interior conditions were significantly associated with child neglect, while controlling for a series of family social factors.•Study findings suggested that prevention and early intervention should consider targeting physical household problems to promote parental and child health and wellbeing.•Policymakers should consider providing subsidized housing improvement programs to alleviate adverse family conditions, and to achieve environmental justice for at-risk families and children.
