Using estimated radiation in crop models amplified the negative impacts of climate variability on maize and winter wheat yields in China

•One measured and eleven estimated radiation datasets are analyzed in this study.•Using estimated radiation mostly led to an overestimation of the crop yields.•Estimated radiation caused greater bias in winter wheat yield than in maize yield.•The negative impacts of changes in radiation on crop yields could be exaggerated.
