Coupled effective stress and internal stress for modeling coal permeability

•Internal interaction between matrix and cleat is quantitatively described by two internal stresses.•A sorption stress model is established to better represent the impact of gas sorption on in-situ coalbed horizontal stress.•A new permeability model considering the coupling effect of effective stress and internal stress is developed.
