•Take working status with complex cognitive tasks as a pilot project.•Focus group interviews inform people’s all demands for a healthy acoustic environment.•People’s demand system consists of a three-factor structure.•A shortened demand questionnaire (DQ-HAEW8) is developed.•DQ-HAEW8 can be used to measure the health level of acoustic environments.
