Quantitative characterization of the fracture behavior of sandstone with inclusions: Experimental and numerical investigation

•Three basic crack types are identified by displacement vector analysis.•Crack evolution is analyzed based on the extracted horizontal strain along crack path.•A DIC-based method is proposed for determining the stress for crack initiation.•The reinforcement effect of weak inclusions is quantitatively analyzed.
