Design and experimental study on FBG-based crack extension monitoring sensor

•The sensor can be used to monitor crack growth at structural joints.•Equal-strength beam is used to realize the desensitization mechanism of the sensor.•The sensor shows good linearity and repeatability in calibration tests.•The sensor is used in model experiments and shows good consistency with simulation.
