•Impact of orchard environment on fruit quality and storability was assessed.•Temperature is a major environment variable that affects apple fruit quality.•Apples from a relatively warm site are smaller, less red colored and more affected by russeting and fungal decay.•Fruit from relatively cold sites are more susceptible to watercore, CO2 injury and postharvest softening.
