Attenuation and inflection of initially planar shock wave generated by femtosecond laser pulse

•Attenuation of laser shock is simulated using molecular dynamics and hydrodynamics.•Lateral unloading waves inflect the shock front gradually from its edges.•The front keeps its planar form only in a triangular zone underneath the focal spot.•The maximal possible peening depth is limited by a radius of laser focal spot.
