Identifying false growth mindsets in adults and implications for mathematics motivation

•Used three mindset measures to assess comprehensive profiles in cluster analyses.•Identified adults, undergraduate students, and teachers with false growth mindset.•Fixed mindsets and false growth mindsets had less positive mathematics motivation.•Consistent growth mindset profiles were associated with more positive motivation.
