•The typical fabrication methods of alloy phases in AMBs are summarized and their advantages and limitations are compared•The recent advances in the use of alkali metal-containing alloys as a host or surface protective layers in AMBs are systematically overviewed.•A special focus was placed on the fundamental understanding of their structure-composition- performance relationships.
