•A new equation to predict the dry matter intake of Nellore cattle was generated.•The equation was: DMI = −2.1948 + 0.08338 * MBW + 3.9328 * ADG - 0.9030 * ADG2.•The new equation was more accurate and precise than other models already published.•The new equation use can make feedlot beef cattle feeding systems more accurate.
