Stress and distortion of the 10 mm thick plate EH40 and 316L different butt joints in 10 kW laser welding

•Transient temperature field was simulated by peak exponential increasing double cone heat source model.•The stress state evolution mechanism of the weld and its vicinity nodes were clarified in detail.•The mismatch material properties of EH40 & 316L aggravated the generation of transverse tensile stress on the EH40 side.
