•Novel photochemical synthesis of gold-decorated silica nanoparticles (SiO2@Au)•SiO2@Au enhance the fluorescence of riboflavin and Rose Bengal.•Moderate increase of the triplet yield of the dyes in the presence of SiO2@Au.•EPR shows no increase of ROS production by the dyes in the presence of SiO2@Au.•Potential application of SiO2@Au in fluorescence-sensing methods and bioimaging.
