Sentinels of Seabed (SoS) indicator: Assessing benthic habitats condition using typical and sensitive species

•New indicator based on the change in sentinel species composition with pressures.•SoS uses proportion of frequent and sensitive species to each habitat and pressure.•SoS shows a very sensitive performance to all combinations of pressure and habitat.•Response curves correspond to theoretical curves, determining habitat sensitivity.•Areas negatively affected can be mapped, a useful tool for determining habitat GES.
