•Seasonal DOM changes at the sediment–water interface in Lake Chaohu were analyzed.•Mineralization of DOM results in the nitrogen and phosphorus release.•Cyanobacterial growth and decline contribute to the DOM components in Lake Chaohu.•The strongest P release from sediments occurs during the early growth stage.
