Abstract
•The effective reflection of a fiber Bragg grating is introduced.•It is shown that the effective reflection strongly depends on laser power.•An experimental technique for obtaining the grating effective reflection is proposed.•Analytical formula for the effective reflection of a fiber Bragg grating is derived.
