Prediction of carbon dioxide production from green waste composting and identification of critical factors using machine learning algorithms

•Carbon dioxide production prediction via machine learning with input from 18 groups.•Random forest predicted classification and regression models most accurately.•The Gini index indicated total organic carbon critical to carbon dioxide production.•Modifying critical factors might lower carbon dioxide during green waste composting.
