The operated Charcot foot: biomechanics of the operated foot and foot ulcerations and their management

This chapter is dedicated to the management of the Charcot neuroarthropathic foot (diabetic foot). The authors review the essentials of skin ulceration and its management and follow-up. A special section is dedicated to foot deformity. The preventive measures usually taken against Charcot foot deformity in diabetic patients are discussed with emphasis on the role of footwear. All aspects of the deformed foot including its conservative and surgical management are analyzed. The postsurgical rehabilitation of the deformed foot, an important step in management, is also discussed. The different complications of the Charcot deformed foot are presented in this chapter along with the psychosocial implications of the disease.
