•We evaluated clinical and functional factors and malocclusion in children aged 8-10 years.•A directed acyclic graph was created for the selection of covariates.•The prevalence of malocclusion was higher among children with nonnutritive sucking habits.•Orofacial disorders and cavitated carious lesions may affect the malocclusion.•Dental caries and orofacial disorders may be relevant for addressing malocclusion in children.
