•Station 4L involvement usually occurs with multiple nodal stations involvement.•Routine dissection of stations 5–9 is sufficient to ensure staging accuracy.•The addition of Station 4L dissection could not improve survival.•Station 4L dissection is associated with increased risk of postoperative complications.
