•A novel fast FTC scheme based on command filter and neural network is proposed by using backstepping control for the HRV with complex uncertainties.•The command filter and adaptive neural network are combined to reconstruct system nonlinearities and deal with complex uncertainties in the HRV..•The novel fast FTC scheme solves the complexity explosion problem in the standard backstepping control.
