•There is a lack of clarity and consensus in empowerment definitions in PD literature.•In PD literature, empowerment has been defined as a multilevel construct ranging from intra- and inter-personal levels.•People with PD view empowerment as multidimensional including personal control, capacity/state/resource, and behavior.•People with PD perceive empowerment as a relational construct that can interplay with various health-related factors.•Larger community and societal level empowerment constructs are not yet well-explored in PD.
