•Lowering of the roughness sublayer depth with the atmospheric stratification increases.•Turbulent flow decoupling above and within the canopy due to the LAD of the forest.•With increasing stability submeso structures propagates downwards.•In super stable conditions submeso structures are present in the whole roughness sublayer.•In super stable conditions submeso motions can modulate the forest exchange.
