•A new reactor using concentrated solar power for hydrogen production is proposed.•The thermal performance of the reactor is numerically investigated in detail.•The reactor efficiency can be increased by 2.63–30.21% using the integrated design.•The control strategy is discussed to stabilize the outdoor reactor efficiency.
