Three-dimensional ultrasound imaging of the jawbone for ridge width determination: A pre-clinical ex-vivo porcine study

•A novel method and algorithm were presented to merge ultrasound jawbone images from the facial and lingual sides into 3-dimension volume.•Three-dimension ultrasound images spatially correlated with clinically standard cone beam computed tomography.•Alveolar ridge width derived from ultrasound was within 8% error in the majority sites, when compared to cone beam computed tomography.•Large field-of-view 3-dimension ultrasound volume could be used to register with other ultrasound volumes taken at different time or with other imaging modalities to study intraoral anatomy in clinical as well as research settings.
