Impact of Retinol Palmitate Overdose on the Erythrocyte Morphology

The shape and form-factor parameters of erythrocytes are changing significantly at various pathological and physiological conditions. Overdose of nano-sized substance, e.g. such as Vitamin A, may occur in cases of rich retinol and carotene food consummation with a vitamin-containing medicaments intake. In current study the morpho-densitometric traits for rats receiving orally 150000 IU of retinol palmitate solution for 6 days are explored. The blood smears were evaluated in terms of alterations of geometrical and optical parameters of erythrocytes for two groups of animals: oil base and retinol palmitate (n=6 animals for each group). The obtained results demonstrate that an overdose of retinol palmitate causes changes in the torus curvature and pallor of discocytes, their surface area and volume. This suggests that changes of the morpho-densitometric traits of erythrocytes are a noticeable prognostic criterion for hypervitaminosis A development in early, pre-clinical stages.
