•A hybrid spatiotemporal convolution-based cellular automata model was proposed.•Using 3D-CNN to assimilate the latent information in spatiotemporal neighborhoods.•The ST-CA model outperformed other comparison methods on accuracy.•Spatiotemporal neighborhood property is helpful for accurate LUCC simulations.
