•In the Netherlands “completed life” or “tiredness of life” is a much discussed topic.•Some people without (severe) illness request euthanasia or assisted suicide (EAS).•They suffer in physical, psychological, social, and existential dimensions.•There is not always sufficient medical ground for their suffering to grant EAS.•Reasons for the request not resulting in EAS seem to be intertwined.
