•The application and efficacy of TURBT for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) remain unknown.•More than two-thirds of the T2-stage MIBC were resected via TURBT.•The therapeutic efficiency of current TURBT techniques for MIBC remains not comparable than cystectomy.•There are emergent needs to improve the capacity of tumor clearance of TURBT techniques.
