Fault Zone Identification and Fault Classification in a Series Compensated Transmission Line Using Decision Tree

Distance protection of a series compensated transmission line has several challenges in the verticals of detection and classification. A new approach has been discussed throughout this paper to secure the compensated transmission line by applying Decision Tree method. This proposed Decision Tree approach uses post fault voltage and post fault current samples. Faulted voltage and faulted current samples are utilized as an input vector with respect to a target output to recognize faulted zone and also classification of all ten types of fault. This proposed method has been tested with vast variations in parameters and the result of this testing indicate, the proposed Decision Tree technique can identify the zone of fault and the types of fault accurately and reliably with less computational time and less error with respect to existing SVM, RB function method in the TCSC-based transmission line.
