Abstract
This study to sought investigate the effects of mixed grain powder (yulmu-sunsik) on obesity and hyperlipidemia.Yulmu-sunsik was prepared by mixing Cucurbita moschata Duch., Wolfiporia extensa, barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), Carthamus tinctorius L., Monascus purpureus, Nelumbinis semen, Dioscorea batatas Decne, and yulmu (Coix lacryma-jobi L.) as the primary ingredients. The antioxidant properties of yulmu-sunsik CP65 (yulmu : barley : the other ingredients=6.5:2.5:1) were measured.Animal testing was performed by classifying C57BL/6 mice into a normal group (normal), high-fat diet group (60% fat, control), high-fat diet with low-CP65 group (1 g/kg/d, CSL), and high-fat diet with high-CP65 group (2 g/kg/d, CSH).The ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities, and total polyphenol levels were higher in heated-CP65.Bodyweight, liver and epididymal white adipose tissue weight significantly decreased in the CSL group compared to the control group. The CSL group also showed significantly decreased total blood cholesterol levels compared to the control group.Blood triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels significantly decreased, hepatic lipids levels were significantly lowered, and blood high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels significantly increased in the CSL and CSH groups compared to the control group.Based on these results, yulmu-sunsik may be considered a nutritious and healthy meal replacement that can promote the reduction of obesity and hyperlipidemia.
