Abstract
The pursuit of a sustainable future can be realised by not only utilising available sustainable energy sources but also coupling them with sustainable energy technologiesfor final delivery. Batteries and supercapacitors have served as effective technologies for sustainable storage devices but still face fundamental and technological hurdles to be overcome. Batteries and supercapacitors are considered to be complementary devices which have often been coupled with each other for performance enhancement or used individually depending on the end application. Batteries and supercapacitors have recognized adequate market space with their rapid expansion of demand, but require intensive research for development of robust technologies to sustain the next-generation energy requirements. This chapter will focus on the current state of the art of energy storing devices on the basis of their market roll out and technological maturity along with highlighting the production and performance. The progresses and constraints in the development of technologies from material to device design will be elucidated. Finally the new emerging materials and technologies with adequate potential of future implementation as high-performing sustainable energy technologies will be discussed and evaluated.
